When the Herman Volunteer Fire Company outgrew its original home, the members took on an ambitious mission: to construct a modern, state-of-the-art facility from the ground up.
Driven by volunteer labor and local fundraising, the project yielded an award-winning firehouse built without a single dollar of taxpayer money. Here is the story of how dedication, craftsmanship, and community pride turned that vision into a lasting reality.
A Need for Modernization
In 1998, the members of Herman Volunteer Fire Company made the decision to build a state-of-the-art fire station to replace their aging 43-year-old facility. The original station had grown out of date and could no longer accommodate the department’s growing fleet of modern fire apparatus.

Station Project Groundbreaking
February – 2000
The resulting 13,885-square-foot facility was constructed at a cost of just $86.42 per square foot—an incredible achievement driven by the dedication of the membership. Volunteers personally donated 40% of the construction labor.
From setting concrete forms and wheeling cement to erecting scaffolding, hanging bar joists, and prepping walls for paint, their hands-on involvement resulted in a beautiful, highly functional facility built to serve the community for decades.

Financing for the project was raised primarily through the fire department’s monthly raffle. The members take immense pride in the fact that no tax dollars were used to fund the station’s construction.
